478660_horn_playerthese are the musicvideo’s and concerts that make me  » smile,   » laugh,   » watch in awe,   » let me feel good,   » make me think, or   » let my eyes get a bit watery.

my sister and brother-in-law are musicians and it hurts them if people illegally copy their cd’s. please don’t hurt them, they are nice people. so buy cd’s + dvd’s or legally download them.

michael jackson – earth song

too sentimental, too emotional, too naïve?

this video confronts us with the things going wrong in our world. it contains some emotional scenes, like the elephant mother with its baby, the father who sees the bicycle belonging to his girl who was killed during bombings in kosovo and remembering better times (did the video not appear during the time of the war in kosovo?).

the video then shows everything (well, almost everything) turning allright again. cut down trees that stand back up, tanks and soldiers being blown away by the wind, even someone who was shot and killed returning to live. isn’t that overdone? naïve? not in touch with our harsh reality? didn’t this fairytale go well with the world michael jackson created for himself and lived in?

maybe, maybe not.

the song shows that there is an awareness of reality. the lyrics themselves don’t even go further than asking questions and expressing disbelief. the video shows change, fairytale-style.

but the moment the change starts in the video is very striking and remarkable. it’s when michael jackson and many voices with him start asking questions! then the change comes. the wind starts to blow and turns everything allright. biblical stories speak about the wind as a symbol for the holy spirit of god that renews and heals the world. doesn’t this video give these words visual form? does it not speak of a better world where we all dream about?

if we start asking questions, if we realize that we can’t go on in our old ways, if we notice that there’s an alternative, then change is possible, then change has begun. so michael jackson – even after his death – shows us his dream, show us how beautiful the world can be. and if we focus our attention on all that is good, we won’t have time left to spend on bad things!

lyrics

What about sunrise?
What about rain?
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain?
What about killing fields?
Is there a time?
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…?
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before?
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying earth, this weeping shore?
.
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
.
What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…?
What about flowering fields?
Is there a time?
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…?
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war?
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying earth, this weeping shore?
.
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh…
.
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far
.
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh…
.
Hey, what about yesterday? (what about us?)
What about the seas? (what about us?)
The heavens are falling down (what about us?)
I can’t even breathe (what about us?)
What about Africans? (what about us?)
I ain’t even you (what about us?)
What about nature’s worth? (ooh ooh)
It’s our planet’s womb! (what about us?)
.
What about animals? (what about it?)
We’ve turned kingdoms to dust (what about us?)
What about elephants? (what about us?)
Have we lost their trust? (what about us?)
What about crying whales? (what about us?)
We’re ravaging the seas! (what about us?)
What about forest trails? (ooh ooh)
Burnt despite our pleas! (what about us?)
.
What about the holy land? (what about it?)
Torn apart by creed? (what about us?)
What about the common man? (what about us?)
Can’t we set him free? (what about us?)
What about children dying? (what about us?)
Can’t you hear them cry? (what about us?)
Where did we go wrong? (ooh ooh)
Someone tell me why! (what about us?)
.
What about babies born? (what about it?)
What about the days? (what about us?)
What about all their joy? (what about us?)
What about the man? (what about us?)
What about the crying man? (what about us?)
What about Abraham? (what about us?)
What about death again (ooh ooh)
Do we give a damn?
.
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh…

thom yorke – harrowdown hill

thom yorke (radiohead + unkle) in a fascinating video that uses the tilt/shift technique. movie-pictures from real life are changed with digital effects to make them look like miniature scale models. strange and estranging, but very engaging. this video was the first to use this technique.

first single off the grammy-nominated “the eraser”. available on xl recordings.

lyrics

Don’t walk the plank like I did
You will be dispensed with
When you’ve become inconvenient
Up on Harrowdown Hill
Where you used to go to school
That’s where I am
That’s where I’m lying down
.
Did I fall or was I pushed?
Did I fall or was I pushed?
And where’s the blood?
And where’s the blood?
.
I’m coming home
I’m coming home
To make it all right
So dry your eyes
.
We think the same things at the same time
We just cant do anything about it
.
So don’t ask me
Ask the ministry
Don’t ask me
Ask the ministry
.
We think the same things at the same time
There are so many of us
So you can’t count
.
We think the same things at the same time
There are too many of us
So you can’t count
.
Can you see me when I’m running?
Can you see me when I’m running?
Away from them
.
I can’t take their pressure
No one cares if you live or die
They just want me gone
They want me gone
.
I’m coming home
I’m coming home
To make it all right
So dry your eyes
.
We think the same things at the same time
We just cant do anything about it
.
We think the same things at the same time
There are too many of us
So you can’t count
.
I was lured into the back of Harrowdown Hill
It was me lured into the back of Harrowdown Hill
I was lured into the back of Harrowdown Hill
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness
I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness
I feel me…

a historic concert, historic music and a historic performer, singer and songwriter: johnny cash.

these are the kind that concerts that one never forgets. johnny cash sings and plays in one of the worst prisons of the time: san quentin. he sings a song about the prison to the prisoners and their reactions are easy to understand but also a bit scary…

“san quentin, i hate every inch of you…” [yeeaahhh!!]

the musical ‘annie’ and the world of rap – do these two mix well? i think so. rapper jay z uses a song from the musical to write a delightful rap. in the nice video children are also given a prominent role.

a classic guitar intro. this is how rock should sound like.

the video above is not the official video. it’s hard to find one on the internet and especially hard to find one that i can put on my wordpress blog. if you want the official video look in the left column under vodpod video’s musicologie. the video above is a beautiful studio version.

R.E.M. – Everybody Hurts

to watch the official video you’ll have to look in the lefthand column under vodpod video’s musicologie. i couldn’t find a single video of good quality that i could post on a wordpress blog.

above is a beautiful live performance at rock am ring – june 3rd, 2006.

emotional music with a touching video. stuck in a traffic jam you can read people’s thoughts. a man on a bridge throws down pages out of a bible (?). and there’s the end! enough there for a long discussion.

part of the lyrics (Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

When your day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you’re sure you’ve had enough of this life, well hang on.
Don’t let yourself go, ’cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes
.
Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it’s time to sing along.
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
If you think you’ve had too much of this life, well hang on.
.
‘Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts. Don’t throw your hand. Oh, no. Don’t throw your hand.
If you feel like you’re alone, no, no, no, you are not alone.

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
…So, hold on, hold on,…
Everybody hurts. You are not alone.

Fugees – Ready Or Not

Wow! the submarine sounds, the action movie, the good rap – this is catchy music and video.

the lyrics contain many references to artists, poculture en places like guantanamo bay – a name that pops out now, while i didn’t even notice it in 1995.

most of the lyrics:

[CHORUS:]
Ready Or Not, Here I Come, You Can’t Hide
Gonna Find You and Take it Slowly
Ready Or Not, Here I Come, You Can’t Hide
Gonna Find You and Make you want me

[Wyclef Jean:]
Now that I escape, sleepwalker awake
Those who could relate know the world ain’t cake
Jail bars ain’t golden gates
Those who fake, they break,
When they meet their 400 pound mate
If I could rule the world
Everyone would have a gun in the ghetto of course
When giddyupin’ on their horse
I Kick a rhyme drinkin’ moonshine
I pour a sip on the concrete, for the deceased
But no don’t weep, Wyclef’s in a state of sleep
Thinkin’ ’bout the robbery that I did last week.
Money in the bag, banker looked like a drag
I want to play with pelicans from here to Baghdad
Gun blast, think fast, I think I’m hit
My girl pinched my hips to see if I still exist.
I think not, I’ll send a letter to my friends,
A born again hooligan only to be king again.
.
[Lauryn Hill:]
I play my enemies like a game of chess, where I rest, no stress
If you don’t smoke sess, lest.
I must confess, my destiny’s manifest
In some Goretex and sweats I make treks like I’m homeless
Rap orgies with Porgy and Bess,
Capture your bounty like Elliot Ness, YES
Bless you if you represent the Fu
But I’ll hex you with some witch’s brew if you’re Doo Doo Voo Doo,
I can do what you do, easy, BELIEVE ME
Frontin’ niggas give me hee-bee-gee-bees
So while you’re imitating Al Capone
I’ll be Nina Simone
And defacating on your microphone.
.
[Chorus:]
Ready Or Not, Here I Come, You Can’t Hide
Gonna Find You and Take it Slowly
.
[Lauryn's Interlude]
You can’t run away
From these styles I got, oh baby, hey baby
Cause I got a lot, oh yeah
And anywhere you go
My whole crew’s gonna know
You can’t hide from the block, oh no.
.
[Praz:]
Ready or not, refugees takin’ over
The Buffalo soldier, dread-lock rhasta
On the twelfth hour, fly by in my bomber
Crews run for cover, now they’re under pushin’ up flowers
Superfly true lies, do or die,
Toss me high – only puff la,
With my crew from lock high
I refugee from Guantanamo Bay
Dance around the border like I’m Cassius Clay
.
[Chorus (Lauryn)]

Madonna – Take a Bow

an enchanting video about the preparations of a matador and a lady before a bullfight. in the background there are subtle references to another fight – that between two lovers. there’s a lot attention to detail and the often used slow motion goes well with the song.
